Signed autograph letter [about his play The Dream inspired by a novel by Emile Zola] - 1891. Signed autograph letter "Alfred Bruneau" to a gentleman at 14 bis rue Viète [Paris], October 4, 1891, 1 p. 8vo The composer is preparing to begin the composition of one of his most famous works: The Dream, an opera inspired by the famous novel of the same name by his friend Emile Zola.

"Sir Upon my return from a short absence, I find your very kind letter and I want to thank you immediately. I will certainly seek out your drama and read it with the keenest interest, not for personal pleasure, unfortunately, as I am about to embark on a huge task that will occupy me for many years, but not for artistic pleasure.

I hope that upon your return, you will fulfill your promise. I will be delighted to make your acquaintance." Composer and conductor, Alfred Bruneau played a decisive role in introducing realism to the French lyrical stage, adapting Emile Zola's naturalism to music.

It was in 1885 that the two friends met, a friendship that would last fifteen years, until the death of the writer. After the composer's adaptation of The Dream, Zola provided him with the subject for several works, such as The Attack on the Mill (1893), and he himself wrote the libretto for Messidor (1897) and The Hurricane (1901) as well as The Child King (1905).
