He began to paint and draw and then moved to Paris in 1882 to perfect his knowledge of art. It permeates limpressionnisme and became friends with edgar degas and Vincent Van Gogh. He frequented cabarets, including the Moulin Rouge, and immortalized in his paintings as well as his posters (moulin rouge, the greedy, 1891). He also painted theaters, music-halls and brothels (in the lounge of the street Mills, 1894) he took the characters from life. He became an iconic figure of the Parisian nights.
