Autographed letter signed by Victor Hugo to Théodore de Banville. One page in 8vo on blue paper.
"My poet, I love you, for you are a great heart as well as a great mind." A friendly and warm letter from Victor Hugo to his friend Théodore de Banville, congratulating him on the publication of his comedy Florise.April 22 [Hauteville House, 1870]. "It is charming, it is cheerful, it is amusing. Oh, the sweet and dark poem! I have an expanded mind and a tight heart! I will often reread this Florise.
For example, there is a printing error on page 132, we will try it for we would try it. The exquisite, perfumed, flamboyant, living poem has emerged from my four verses like the tulip emerges from the onion. Your tulip has the fragrance. My poet, I love you, for you are a great heart as well as a great mind. I would need an appearance like yours in my solitude. You create work upon work, bravo, you are producing stars from your head. I would like to see Florise performed." A few weeks after this letter, on September 5, 1870, Victor Hugo finally returned to France, ending nearly twenty years of exile. The letter comes with an elegant black wooden frame with filled corners and a window on the back revealing the recipient's name in Victor Hugo's handwriting.
An original edition of Florise (1870) is included, containing the very error pointed out by Victor Hugo, with an autographed dedication from Théodore de Banville to Paul Foucher, also close to Victor Hugo.
