Baron Antoine-Isaac Silvestre de Sacy. French grammarian, philologist, and Arabist orientalist. Signed autograph letter by Antoine-Isaac Silvestre de Sacy, dated... Written in brown ink on a vellum paper sheet with a blind stamp.

Baron Silvestre de Sacy acts here as a protector and influential figure under the July Monarchy. He requests financial assistance for a Madame Lemonnier and follows up on a request made to a Minister for the admission of one of his protégées, Mademoiselle Magny, to the Hospice des Incurables (now Hôpital Laennec in Paris).

This letter perfectly illustrates the social role of high-ranking dignitaries of the period, serving as intermediaries between those in need and the royal administration as winter approaches.

“Sir,

You were kind enough to let me hope for some assistance for Mrs. Lemonnier, whom I had the honor of recommending to you.

I take the liberty of reminding you of it, because this season makes the need more pressing.

Allow me also to remind you of the request I submitted to the Minister, at least six months ago, for a place at the Incurables, women’s section, for Mrs. You had led me to hope that she might obtain this favor, of which she has the greatest need before winter.

I had the honor of handing you the necessary documents in support of this request. Please have them presented again, I beg you.

Please accept, Sir, the assurance of my highest consideration.
