SAINTE BEUVE (Charles Augustin and his father Charles François). Autographed letters from the son and then from the father. 1/ - Letters from Charles Augustin. A note (undated) of thanks for... Having made me read Master Adam; please try to have a note made for me, I won't be able to write an article for a long time, and even I won't write many more for the review, in some time...

1 page in-8°, address on the fourth page. On August 8, 1861, to my dear poet, Thank you for making me relive the complete antique masterpiece. Thanks to your fidelity and the feeling you brought to it, (for talent alone would not have sufficed), the effect is very great; the whole triumphs over our habits; these choirs are accepted and applauded; and the effect would be even greater if the curtain were not lowered a single time, and if the spectator remained under the effect of terror the entire time... Oedipus Rex is the king of dramas.

Madame Lacroix has been sovereignly kind... In which he offers a small volume of [his] poems. You will find some that are memories of Italy, simple flashes but finally flashes captured in that beautiful sunlight... You will be indulgent to everything; there are a few excesses of youth... I am leaving to go seclude myself in the countryside, close by, in order to finish large volumes of which only one has been published for a month.

I am very weary, very old, not too unwell otherwise: and it is necessary to use the last finishing forces for the work and for art.... 2 pages in-8°, an old restoration tear.
