Autographed letter signed "Romain Rolland" to a magazine director Villeneuve (Vaud) [Switzerland], November 15, 1929, 2 pages. 8vo on pale green paper.

Slight wrinkle and browning on the second sheet (see scan). The writer declines a proposal for an article on Maillol's art.

I thank you for considering me for the beautiful magazine you are planning. But I am far too absorbed in my own work to be able to write articles on art at this time.

And I could do so even less regarding Maillol, whom I admire even more: for I forbid myself to speak of him superficially. Please accept all my regrets, and my best wishes for the success of your magazine. Your devoted Romain Rolland Have you thought about securing the collaboration of someone I consider the master of morphology, both artistic and scientific, in Europe: - Edouard Monod-Herzen?

Sotheby's, November 17, 1988, no. 288 Collection "The Alphabet of Genius.
