Puccini responds to the request of a commissioner wishing to have the bohemian interpreted during a charitable event: io non ho niente in contrario che la bohème venga eseguita per una sera corta a scopo benefitico. Despite the failure of the first performance on 1 Feb. 1896, the work was later successful worldwide, raising it to the rank of best romantic opera.
