Pierre Loti confesses his overwork and skillfully declines a request for a preface. Size: 11.5 x 18 cm.

For so many days, I have only thought of you with remorse, about your request, and now your second letter has made me even more confused. But if you knew my life, always overworked, my extreme fatigue. Writing the most urgent letters, I have neither the time nor the courage at this moment. A preface, you see, is something I have never had to do. And I am asked for an average of two per week, and my life would be consumed by it, if I had not imposed the rule of saying no even to my best friends.

Forgive me and pity me a little as well. Believe that you have asked me for something that I truly cannot do, but apart from that, I would be happy to demonstrate my genuine sympathy for you on another occasion.
