Signed letter from Pierre Émile Levasseur, addressed to Eugène Risler, dated June 16, 1887 in Paris, written in brown ink on a double sheet of watermarked laid paper.

In this letter, Levasseur informs his colleague Eugène Risler of the first meeting of the presidents and vice-presidents of the Social Economy Group, which took place that same day.

He specifies that the sections must now meet as soon as possible in order to prepare the questionnaires to be reviewed by the organizing committee at the session of June 30. Levasseur therefore summons Risler to the first meeting of the 15th section, scheduled for June 20, 1887 at 9:30 a., in his office at 26 rue Monsieur-le-Prince.

This document perfectly illustrates Levasseur’s central role in coordinating academic work relating to social economy and applied statistics, fields at the heart of his research. The mention of questionnaires reflects the method then rapidly developing: systematic surveys aimed at better understanding the condition of workers, farmers, and more broadly the laboring classes.

The first meeting of the presidents and vice-presidents of the Social Economy Group took place today, June 16, and it was decided that the sections would meet as soon as possible to prepare the questionnaires that the organizing committee intends to examine at a session on June 30.

Accordingly, I ask you to attend the first meeting of the 15th section, which will be held next Monday, June 20, at 9:30 in the morning, in my office, 26 rue Monsieur-le-Prince.

The letter appears to have been written by another hand; Levasseur adds his signature and includes a handwritten note in parentheses at the end of the postscript.

Pierre Émile Levasseur, born on December 8, 1828 in Paris, where he died on July 10, 1911, was a French historian, economist, statistician, and geographer, and administrator of the Collège de France from 1903 until his death.

Eugène Risler, born on November 5, 1828 in Cernay and died on August 6, 1905 in Nyon, was a French chemist and agronomist.
