Autographed letter signed, [December 1666], to Monseigneur; 3 pages in-4. He has been appointed vicar general of Narbonne, but his presence at the assembly has caused some confusion: "the whole province is informed that the King has granted me the grace to come fill the position of vicar general of Narbonne only to my person without it being extended to the other vicar generals of Mr.

de Narbonne or the Bishop of Agde. I have learned, however, that His Excellency wishes to retract the grace she has given me and to confuse me with those who have not had the same mission as I." He pleads his case, believing he has taken "just measures"; but he is ready to obey: "I will sacrifice without difficulty to his will and desire all the displeasure that I may receive from the confusion that will inevitably follow such a sudden change, and a retreat so unforeseen.

" It is "as easy for the King to forbid the entry of the estates to the other Grand vicars of Narbonne in the following years, or to restrict it to me alone, as it is to take it from me this year after having granted it to me. Nothing pains me more than having passed here with the favor of His Excellency and being revoked by his order.
