Autograph letter signed "max jacob" to marcel thiébaut monastery of st benoît-sur-loire, 16 May 1924, 2 p. In-8° on bifeuillet grey traces of period folds due to the enveloping. Max jacob welcomes the analysis of his latest work by marcel thiébaut, director of calmann-levy publishing. I am deeply touched by your offer and nothing can flatter me more than to see me in a house that I have been used to respecting and loving since childhood.

In principle, I accept with joy. There are contingencies, alas, which I have to think about and which I will write to you about. The analysis you had the courtesy of sending me was a great pleasure.

You have the gift of light: you have revealed the character of my heroes better than I did myself and the essence of the book you have clearly highlighted it in a spirit of fairness very rare among critics. In any case, thank you, my dear colleague and receive, please, my very distinguished greetings with the assurance of my friendly and devoted sentiments of confraternity.

You are not the descendant of this general thiébaut who under Napoleon 1 wrote his adventures in spain with so much talent. Max jacob made, at the beginning of the letter, alluding to a possible acceptance of his part to be published in the calmann-levy editions, and of which marcel thiébaut was then the director. However, this proposal will remain unanswered, as max jacob has been under contract with gallimard since 1923. It is then very likely that thiebaut greeted the appearance of the fleshly man and the reflective man, which appeared at the end of March 1924, and for which Jacob warmly thanks him in this letter.
