Autographed letter signed and dated June 21, 1893, in Port Louis, Rose-Hill, Mauritius. A 4-page letter (with two post-scripts) addressed to "Monsieur Heugel, music publisher" in Paris, discussing the desire to access musical works published by him and what the conditions are to obtain them. He mentions the Conservatoire de Paris and that he is a former laureate, specifying that he has already had access to several works published by different people, including piano scores for four hands. He ends his letter by stating the number of copies he would like (forty copies for himself) and asks what kind of music Henri Heugel has and can make available for his concert in Mauritius. The first postscript indicates that he is the representative of the Gaveau house, a piano manufacturer founded in 1847 and closed in 1971, since 1889. The second postscript states that "for references, please contact Monsieur Gaveau for pianos" and mentions gentlemen "Gustave Adaur, banker" and "Monsieur Barthélémy, senator and member of the Institute" in Passy. It is a supposed mention of Gustave Ador, misspelled by the author. Dimensions: 11.5 x 18 cm. Good condition despite the presence of foxing and wear on the edges. Edouard Mathé, born April 6, 1863, and died in 1936 in Versailles, was a composer, pianist, and conductor. He was appointed in 1882 by the Director of the Conservatoire de Paris to go to Mauritius to direct the Conservatoire there. Henri Heugel, born May 3, 1844, in Paris, and died May 11, 1916, in the same city, is the author of several esteemed literary works. Director of the music publishing house le Ménestrel, he retired in 1948, leaving the reins to his two sons François and Philippe. In 1980, the house was bought by Alphonse Leduc editions. He was made a knight of the Legion of Honor.
