Beautiful signed autograph letter from Marie Pleyel to Mr. De Trémont: “Sick and grateful” - December 22, 1844. Marie Pleyel, born Marie Moke, is one of the most famous virtuosos of the 19th century. A free spirit both in her career and private life, she was highly respected on the European musical scene. Engaged to Hector Berlioz in 1830, she broke off the engagement at her mother’s instigation and married Camille Pleyel on April 5, 1831, the son of composer and piano manufacturer Ignace Joseph Pleyel (founder of the first Pleyel hall in 1830).
This breakup drove Berlioz mad with rage; he attempted to leave Italy (where he was after winning the Prix de Rome) and go to Paris to kill Marie and her mother. Fortunately, circumstances and reason prevailed, and the disastrous plan did not come to fruition. The recipient of this letter resided at 45 rue Saint Lazare in Paris (1844 directory). He served as aide-de-camp to Marshal Augereau and participated in several Napoleonic campaigns. Later, he was appointed ambassador in Vienna, where he played a key role in negotiations after the fall of Napoleon. After returning to France, he became a peer of France under the Restoration.
I would not have waited for your kind letter this morning, dear Mr. De Trémont, to come to see you today if my unfortunate finger, which has caused me a fever that prevented me from sleeping all night, did not force me to stay in my room. You know me too well, I hope, not to be convinced that I am telling you nothing but the exact truth, and the feelings of gratitude and affection that I have for you for so long should, I believe, prevent any accusation of caprice toward me. Format: 1 page, in-8 dimensions. Condition: Generally good, light signs of age.Provenance: Claude Pichois and descendants.
