Marcel proust - autograph letter signed - duel - writer paul adam - 1897. Autographed letter signed "marcel proust", [September 1897], 4 pages in-8, addressed to his "Dear Brother" Lucian Mulhfeld, art critic in the echo of betting, which proust knew since 1896. Proust mentions his health problems (asthma) and regrets his absence at the marriage of paul adam (which took place on 24 June 1897) with marthe meyer, daughter of narcissus meyer and sister of mme mulhfeld.

He expressed his "deep admiration" for the writer and evoked their meeting at the villebon tower ("villebon" in the letter) on the occasion of his famous duel in February 1897 with Lorrain jeans, of which paul adam was one of the witnesses (concerning this letter, see in particular "newsletter of the society of friends of marcel proust and friends of combray" - bulletin n° 19 - 1969 - pp 806 et ss). His kindness was shown to me in a way that would have been particularly pleasant to me, bringing me closer to you and to Mrs muhlfeld on the one hand, to this evening and to this marriage, and on the other hand, giving me an opportunity to express to Mr paul adam my deep admiration for his talent, my sympathy for his person. I had already had the opportunity to do so once, in the city, but under circumstances that older people considered so inappropriate to do so that they advised me to postpone the pleasure I would have found there.

Of this second pleasure, which has deprived me of illness, do you also want to ask you to express the regret that I have had to give it up, to paul adam, to whom I would have been so happy to offer my congratulations and my vows. I'm afraid you don't think about it, either of the two commissions, but if you think about it you'll please me and I'll be grateful for it.
