Lyautey LAS Autographed Signed Letter. Confidences from Tananarive, May 25, 1902
Double sheet with header from the Higher Commander of the South [Madagascar] (13.5 X 20.5), (4) pp. Lyautey has been in Madagascar since 1897, in 1900 Gallieni entrusted him with the command of the Southern Zone. General Famin was then Director of Colonial Troops (1900-107). The two men had served in Tonkin in 1894 (Famin was Gallieni's deputy in the command of the 1st and 2nd territories). After a few words of condolences following the death of Famin's mother-in-law, and congratulations, Famin taking over the direction of the colonial troops (he was the deputy director), Lyautey announces his return to France and confides: he considers his task accomplished... And as I do not conceive of any other, I will probably seek to orient myself outside the army.
