Set of 2 signed autograph letters. French playwright, librettist of operettas and operas, and novelist. Set of two signed autograph letters from Ludovic Halévy.

Signed autograph letter, undated, addressed to a friend, written in black ink on a double sheet of watermarked wove paper. In this first letter, Halévy recounts an altercation with the theater director Léon Carvalho, who was then in charge of the Opéra-Comique.

Hurt by a contemptuous remark, he reacts firmly and threatens to no longer patronize the institution.

My dear friend, I only wish to ask you not to forget what was said this evening in your presence.

At the moment when I was discussing a question of casting and the date of the performance, Mr. Carvalho found it good to insult me and call me the Author of Bouis-bouis. So be it, but for that reason, I would be out of place at the Opéra-Comique and I will not set foot there again.

Dimensions: 10.7 x 16.9 cm.

Condition: See photos and description for more details. Number of pages: 2 pages.

Signed autograph letter, undated, addressed to a colleague, written in black ink on a double sheet of watermarked wove paper, with a 7.5 mm mourning border.

The second letter has a more familiar and personal tone. Halévy explains that his son has lost part of his English notebook, and he asks his correspondent to provide the missing texts so that the child can prepare for an oral exam.

Sir and dear colleague, It’s me again. My little boy wrote his English homework in a poorly bound notebook and he lost the first two sheets of this notebook which contained the text of your first lessons: quatrains and proverbs. The first quatrain in the notebook is this one: Agray, old man, the third and last... Everything preceding this is missing for my little boy who cannot prepare for the oral exam on Saturday.

So I am asking you to kindly send me the quatrains and proverbs that are not in this unfortunate notebook. I am sorry to trouble you with this and I thank you a thousand times in advance.

Dimensions: 11 x 16.3 cm. Number of pages: 3 pages.
