My dear friend, Thank you for your deeply touching and affectionate sympathy. How is it that I was absent and why was I not at home when you came?

This is something I can hardly explain. Nevertheless, I hope you will not hold it against me, and I thank you for that. On Thursday morning, I will make sure to stay indoors so that I do not miss you. I will have too great a satisfaction in shaking your hand and thanking you for the part you take in my sorrow.

My poor friend, how I need affection around me and how I feel irreparably isolated! I am still in the upward phase, and the more I go on, the more the irreparable is assured.
