LOUIS XVI - handwritten letter signed - Chaillou - right of aubaine - 1783. LOUIS XVI - handwritten letter signed - Chaillou - right of aubaine - 1783 Louis XVI, born on August 23, 1754, in Versailles under the name Louis-Auguste de France, was King of France and Navarre from May 10, 1774, to September 13, 1791, and then King of the French until September 21, 1792. Known civilly as Louis Capet, he was guillotined on January 21, 1793, in Paris. The son of the Dauphin Louis de France and Marie-Josèphe of Saxony, he became Dauphin upon his father's death. Married in 1770 to Marie Antoinette of Austria, he ascended the throne in 1774 at the age of nineteen, following the death of his grandfather Louis XV.

Inheriting a kingdom on the brink of bankruptcy, he initiated several financial reforms, notably supported by ministers Turgot, Calonne, and Necker, such as the proposal for an equal direct tax, all of which failed due to opposition from the parliaments, clergy, nobility, and court. He evolved personal rights, abolishing torture, serfdom, etc. He achieved a significant military victory against England through his active support for American independents. However, the French intervention in America ultimately bankrupted the kingdom.
