Autograph letter signed to Emperor Napoleon I, 1806. Autograph letter signed by Louis-Pierre Anquetil, Historian of France, addressed to Napoleon I, dated May 25, 1808. Written in brown ink on a watermarked laid paper sheet.

In this important historical document, Anquetil, then a member of the Institute and the Legion of Honor, formally requests the prestigious title of Historiographer of France. He specifies that this request is made “without fee,” seeking above all imperial recognition and the “seal of approval” for his latest work.

“Request for the title of Historiographer of France without fee

To His Majesty the Emperor and King

Sire,

Having already been designated by Your Majesty as Historian of France, I dare to ask you to perpetuate in me the title of Historiographer of France, which has existed for two hundred and forty years, and to grant it to me as Duclos held it.

May Your Majesty, Sire, deign to place on my latest work the public seal of your approval, by a title that will flatter me all the more since it will be a sign of the continuation of your kindness.

I am, with the deepest respect for Your Majesty, Sire, your most humble and most obedient servant and subject,

Anquetil, member of the Institute and of the Legion of Honor
May 25, 1806”
