Fine autograph letter signed, unpublished, addressed on December 19, 1985 to his friend Francis Patteyn from Spain “in exile.” One large quarto page.

For your wife and for you, my most affectionate wishes from a faithful old friend... Thank you for all the kindnesses with which you overwhelmed me in 1985. May the year 1986 see our great friendship grow even stronger. I was sorry not to see you in Madrid, but my life is very complicated. We even had to sell—at a ridiculously low price—our lovely house by the sea.

We were living there (sic) under a constant threat of death. But it is a fact: $100,000 to whoever kills me! Life is expensive, and the misery of the times calls for amateurs... So I enter 1986 without really knowing what will come of it, but I am facing it.
