” Lamartine's political career ends quickly with the rise to power of Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, future Napoleon III, against whom he loses the presidential elections. The Complete Works contain 5 of Lamartine's main and oldest works: The Death of Socrates, Song of the Sacre, The Fall of the Rhine at Laufen, and The Last Song of Harold's Pilgrimage. Lamartine's "Poetic Meditations" is a collection of poems that marks a major turning point in French poetry, inaugurating the Romantic movement. Through these poems, Lamartine expresses personal feelings such as melancholy, nostalgia, and the quest for the infinite, often inspired by his own experiences, notably his lost love for Julie Charles, immortalized in the famous poem "The Lake.

" These poems are characterized by an exaltation of nature, which becomes the mirror of the poet's inner emotions. Lamartine explores universal themes such as the passage of time, death, and the aspiration for spiritual communion with the universe.
