We often talk about you and not a day goes by that I don't thank you in my heart for everything you have done for me. I owe much of my happiness to you. It is unparalleled in the world. How many times have we regretted that you are so far from us.

Little is known about Anna Robin, his correspondent, to whom Giono seems infinitely grateful here. In the same year 1941, the writer had just published his literary essay "Pour saluer Melville", published by Gallimard. He had published a translation of Melville two years earlier, co-written with Lucien Jacques.
