IMPERIAL GUARD - handwritten letter signed - to Canrobert - Universal Exhibition - 1867. The Imperial Guard was created by Napoleon I on May 18, 1804.

It was formed from the former guard of the consuls. The Imperial Guard is an elite army corps of the First Empire. It is intended to protect the Emperor of the French. The guard serves as an elite reserve for the Grand Army during battles. It is composed of veteran soldiers.

The Imperial Guard, heir to that of the First Empire, was reestablished by decree on May 1, 1854, by Napoleon III. The squadron of the hundred guards, created by the decree of March 24, 1854, is not part of it. It was dissolved on October 28, 1870, after the defeat at Sedan. The letter is addressed to Marshal Canrobert, commanding the 1st corps in Paris. This letter is set in the context of the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1867, organized during the reign of Napoleon III and open from April 1 to November 3, 1867, on the Champ-de-Mars. This major event of the Second Empire attracted several million visitors from around the world, including many sovereigns and foreign delegations. This exceptional influx necessitated a strengthening of security and surveillance measures in the capital, particularly around strategic locations such as Les Invalides or the City Hall, likely explaining the creation of new guard posts mentioned in the letter. "Imperial Guard General Staff New Posts of Les Invalides Paris March 31, 1867 Sir Marshal, Your Excellency informs me by your dispatch of the 29th of this month that it is proposed, at the request of Mr. the Division General Governor of Les Invalides, to establish two posts at the honor gate of the City Hall and at the Vauban gate, intended to meet the increased service due to the large influx of foreign visitors and the occupation of the new barracks of Les Invalides, and that it would not be possible to call upon the pensioners due to their age."
