Signed autograph letter from Henry Barraud, addressed to Marcel Mihalovici, dated November 16, 1940, written in blue ink on a sheet of blue vellum paper, with its stamped and postmarked envelope. I was very pleased to receive your letter. It followed me from Montpellier to Marseille, where I have been settled for about fifteen days, and where my wife just gave birth to a little girl four days ago, whom we welcomed with joy, although she chose a strange time for her entrance.

I learned from Marthe Joubert that you believed I was a prisoner. And it is true that, surrounded in mid-June by the German columns, I had little other fate ahead of me than captivity, where many of my comrades still find themselves. I escaped from it through a series of adventures where my luck served me well, but I came out in quite a sad physical state. But all that is already far away, and since my release, I have completed a whole string quartet that I had sketched out the first pages of at the front lines of the Saar, not far from where poor Gaubert lived several rather harsh months before tragically dying there.

I have news only of a few of our comrades. Rivier, gassed in the previous war, did not take part in this one.

He spent the whole year in Cahors and is still there, at the address below: 64 rue Emile Zola. Rosenthal is a prisoner, and I am very worried about the conditions in which he must live. Milhard has gone to America. Delannoy has returned to Paris.

I do not know where Delvincourt is. For the moment, I am working in radio; I do not know if this will last. I am not sure what the coming months hold for us.

A student of Louis Aubert at the Conservatoire de Paris, he did not obtain his diploma in 1927, apparently due to his refusal to follow traditional methods. Marcel Mihalovici was a French composer born in Romania. He was discovered by Georges Enesco in Bucharest.
