"My brother having replaced me on the war committee and as inspector general, it is he who has received the gracious letter that was intended for me, albeit late. He has just handed it to me. I regret to inform you that he was unable to place Mr. Meynier on the advancement board; his inspection work was completed when he received your recommendation. Personally, allow me to thank you for remembering me, and believe me that if I had returned to Bordeaux, I would not have failed to thank you in person for the kind welcome that you and Mr. Pierlot so graciously extended to me during my stay.
