Georges Clairin - Autograph signed letter - Mention of Sarah Bernhardt - 19th century. Autograph signed letter by Georges Clairin, undated. Written in black ink on a laid paper sheet with mourning border and letterhead “62, Rue de Rome”. In this letter addressed to a friend, Georges Clairin evokes the bustle of his studio, mentioning that he is “very busy and locking myself away to finish my painting,” before adding that he will then move on “to drawings.” He also mentions his close friend, the actress Sarah Bernhardt, of whom he was one of the most famous portraitists: “I was unable to go see Sarah, to find out from her whether there was anything new.



Dimensions: 13.4 x 20.6 cm. The paper has a lovely age patina and a few foxing spots, with two central folds inherent to postal sending at the time. Presence of tabs on the back of the letter and a few pencil annotations. See photos and description for more details. Number of pages: 2 pages.



Georges Jules Victor Clairin, born on September 11, 1843 in the former 10th arrondissement of Paris and died on September 2, 1919 in Clohars-Carnoët, was a French painter and illustrator. Representative of the Orientalist movement, he was the uncle of painter Pierre-Eugène Clairin.

Sarah Bernhardt, born on October 22, 1844 in Paris and died on March 26, 1923 in Paris 17th, was a French actress, painter, and sculptor. She is considered one of the most important French actresses of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
