Autograph letter signed by Gaston Bazille, dated August 4, 1885, in Montpellier, written in brown ink on a bifolium and a sheet of laid paper with a printed Senate letterhead. Addressed to “Sir, and dear Director,” Eugène Risler.

On the eve of my departure from Paris for Montpellier, last Saturday, I went to the agronomic institute to ask you for some information on a viticulture question. In the canton of Vaud, you produce excellent white wines with a variety of Chasselas, the Fendant, if I am not mistaken. I do not claim to compete with the wines of Lavaux or Yvorne; but I have quite a lot of Chasselas... Last year my buyer cheated me out of 2,500 francs.

So I would like to make a white Chasselas wine, and I do not know how to do it. No one in the Hérault has ever tried making wine from Chasselas grapes. 20.9 x 20.9 cm. Jean François Gaston Bazille, born on September 21, 1819 in Montpellier and died on April 28, 1894 in that city, was a French lawyer, winegrower, and politician. He was senator for Hérault from 1879 to 1888. Eugène Risler, born on November 5, 1828 in Cernay and died on August 6, 1905 in Nyon, was a French chemist and agronomist.
