Frédéric Godet Signed Autograph Letter, Kochlin-Claudon Affair, 1887
Autograph letter signed to Miss Ida Risler, 3 pages, 1887. Pasteur, Swiss Protestant theologian and essayist. Autograph letter signed by Frédéric Godet, dated July 6, 1887, in Neuchâtel, addressed to Miss Risler. Written in black ink on a double sheet of laid paper, with its stamped and postmarked envelope.
This three-page letter reveals a lesser-known side of Frédéric Godet: his interest in and concern for a contemporary legal case. Referring to the case of Mr. Kochlin-Claudon, accused and convicted of high treason by the German government despite the support of his relatives, who believed him innocent, Godet wonders what should be done:
“Madam,
I have been very late in replying to your letter and in thanking you. I was embarrassed by the most important subject you mention to me, the Kochlin-Claudon case. Not that I take no keen interest in an accused man, in a convicted man whom so many people who know him well believe to be completely innocent; but I was wondering, and I still wonder: What should be done? Should I address myself to the Prince, whose illness keeps him in England?
It seems to me that this is neither the place nor the time.”
His work marked Reformed theology and is still studied today.
