Set of 2 signed handwritten letters to Pierre Lhoste, 1963.
Set of 2 signed handwritten letters.
Signed handwritten letter dated October 3, 1963, written in blue ink on a sheet of watermarked wove paper with a “Doctor” letterhead.
Dear friend,
I was delighted to meet you and Madame Lhoste. Delighted, too, to learn that you spent your childhood on the other side of the left-hand wall of my garden, in Madame Boudoux’s garden.
She used to write to my father once a year to inform him that the branches of our trees were preventing her pears from ripening...
Something is troubling me about a question you asked me (during the second broadcast, I believe): “Do you like the sea?” It now seems to me that I answered very poorly, with platitudes and an inappropriate image—a “public urinal,” I believe. Would it be possible to redo that recording?
Rereading this note, I realize that your radio game is only worthwhile if the answers are spontaneous. If an answer is inadequate, banal, or a failure, too bad for the player: he should not have played. So please disregard this note and retain only its expression of friendship.

Dear Pierre Lhoste,
To rescue my father’s art from oblivion, I would be delighted to see you on April 3 at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. I am ready to be interviewed by you on the radio about this whenever you wish, between April 3 and May 4, 1970.
Warm regards to you and Madame Lhoste.
