Handwritten signed letter to Abbé Morel, 1947. French Dominican priest, art historian, and spiritual writer.

Handwritten signed letter from Pie Raymond Régamey, addressed to Abbé Morel. Written in black ink on a sheet of vellum paper with a printed letterhead of the Order of Preachers – Province of France – Convent of Saint-Jacques.

This letter bears witness to Régamey’s central role in the art market and in promoting modern artists among religious and museum institutions.

In it, he mentions the imminent purchase by the Nantes Museum of Alfred Manessier’s work Salve Regina. He refers to the handling of works by Georges Rouault (kept even in his own cell at the convent) intended for third parties, as well as his search for another Rouault for the city of Lyon. He also mentions his departure for Sarlat to stay with Mr. “My dear Abbé and Friend, I can only send you a quick note: I have a lot to arrange before leaving tomorrow morning for Sarlat, to Mr. De Ségogne, Le Pech St André, near Sarlat, Dordogne.

I have not been able to reach you. I hope you are well now. I am giving instructions for the Rouault in my cell to be taken and handed over to anyone presenting a note from you for that purpose. But I will be back around August 12, and I will contact you again if no one has come on your behalf.

Unless some unlikely mishap occurs, the Nantes Museum is buying Manessier’s Salve Regina. I am now looking for another Rouault for Lyon.

With warmest and respectful regards in Our Lord and Our Lady.”
