Eugénie La Grua - Signed autograph letter, first performance at the opera - 1852. Signed autograph letter by E. Eugénie La Grua (also known as Emma La Grua). Famous soprano singer of Palermitan origin, who distinguished herself on the leading European opera stages. Dated April 1852 in Paris.

Written in brown ink on a vellum paper sheet with decorative scalloped edging. Pencil annotations are present on the second page, and a postal seal on the back.

After her triumphant first performance at the Paris Opera on April 23, 1852, in the role of Irène (world premiere of Halévy and Scribe's opera Le Juif Errant), the young singer expresses her immense relief at having overcome the ordeal of her debut, while apologizing to her friends for the Opera director Nestor Roqueplan's refusal to grant them a box.

Dimensions: 13.3 x 20.2 cm. Traces of former mounting tabs as well as some light handling marks on the back of the sheet. There are traces of wax residue in the upper corners of the letter. Signs of the fold being opened upon receipt caused slight superficial abrasions to the paper surface.

Emma La Grua, born on April 13, 1831 in Palermo and died on November 15, 1922 in Courbevoie, was an Italian soprano. Victor-Louis-Nestor Rocoplan, known as Nestor Roqueplan, was a French journalist, writer, opera and theater director, born on September 14, 1805 in Montréal and died on April 24, 1870 in Paris.
