Autograph letter signed, funeral of Henri TRESCA, 1885. Autograph letter signed by Eugène Tisserand. Dated June 23, 1885, in Paris. Written in brown ink on a double sheet of laid paper with a watermarked printed header reading “Ministère de l'Agriculture - Direction de l'Agriculture.

” Eugène Tisserand, then Director of Agriculture, is addressing a close friend, most certainly Colonel Aimé Laussedat, Director of the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts. He asks him to deliver the eulogy for the great scholar Henri Tresca. Henri Tresca was one of the most distinguished French engineers, a member of the Academy of Sciences, whose name is inscribed on the Eiffel Tower. This letter was written just two days after his death and the day before his funeral.

“Paris, June 23, 1885

My dear friend,

The Minister asks me to tell you that it would really be desirable if you could say a few words at Tresca’s grave. You will only have to let your heart speak.”

Colonel Aimé Laussedat did in fact deliver the funeral tribute the next day, June 24, 1885.

Louis-Eugène Tisserand, born on May 26, 1830 in Flavigny-sur-Moselle and died on October 31, 1925 in Paris 8th, was an Inspector General of Agriculture. Author of several agronomy handbooks, he also served as president of the Society for the Encouragement of National Industry.

Henri Édouard Tresca, born on October 12, 1814 in Dunkirk and died on June 21, 1885 in Paris, was a French mechanical engineer and professor at the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts in Paris.

Aimé Laussedat, born on April 19, 1819 in Moulins and died on March 19, 1907 in Paris, was a French scientist, astronomer specializing in instrumentation and geodesy, surveyor, photographer, topographer, land surveyor, and cartographer.
