Émile Zola autograph letter signed to Charles Leroy and Mathilde Allais

  

Autograph letter signed from Paris, dated November 20, 1895, addressed to “Monsieur Colin,” publisher. In good condition (small stains).

An interesting letter of recommendation in which Zola intervenes on behalf of Madame Charles Leroy: Mathilde Allais, the elder sister of Alphonse Allais. He strongly supports the upcoming publication of a posthumous volume by her husband, who had died shortly before this letter was written, and mentions the widow’s urgent situation.

Charles Leroy, journalist and humorist writer, notably collaborated with Le Tintamarre, Le Monde Comique, and L'Esprit follet.

He achieved notable success with his writings devoted to Colonel Ramollot.

I especially recommend Madame Charles Leroy to your kind consideration. She has pressing reasons to wish that the volume of her husband, which you are to publish, appear as soon as possible; and I take the liberty of adding my own request to hers. She is entirely deserving in a situation that should secure her the help of all good hearts, and that is why I dare to urge you, certain that you will do your best to help her.
