Emile Deschamps - Autograph letter signed, February 2, 1861, in Versailles, 4 pages. Autograph letter signed by Emile Deschamps to a female correspondent, 4 pages, in-8 format, on blue paper with blue ink. Written to an ailing correspondent, this letter shows delicate concern and affectionate support. Upon learning that her condition has worsened, the author expresses his sympathy and regret that he is unable to come and visit her. He warmly encourages her, praising her moral strength, and also mentions a certain Monsieur Vidal. The last page refers to a visit from an abbé and shared memories, in a distinctly kind and benevolent tone. Deschamps, a Romantic poet active in Hugo’s circles and an influential journalist, is here shown in a private, deeply human light. 13.5 x 13.5 cm. The son of a civil servant, he followed his father’s career, but distinguished himself as early as 1812 with an ode, La Paix conquise, which earned him Napoleon’s praise.
