Written in brown ink on a double sheet of vellum paper.

This intimate and friendly note offers a direct and concrete testimony of David d'Angers' creative process, he being famous for immortalizing the great men of his time in the form of bronze medallions. The letter here illustrates the final stage of the work’s return from the founder’s workshop, and shows the sculptor’s closeness to his model or patron. “Dear friend, I have finally been able to take your medallion from the founder’s hands; it is at your disposal. I am not sending it to you because you expressly told me that you wanted to come and pick it up.
