Count Tascher de La Pagerie, Grand Master of the Household of Empress Eugénie - Autograph letter signed to Troplong, President of the Senate, Palais des Tuileries - 1853. Autograph letter signed by Count Tascher de La Pagerie, divisional general, senator of the Second Empire, and Grand Master of the Household of Empress Eugénie since January 25, 1853. The letter is dated June 2, 1853. Written in black ink on vellum paper with a engraved and blind-embossed letterhead reading “Household of the Empress - Grand Master’s Office,” located and dated “Palais des Tuileries.” In this letter addressed to His Excellency Monsieur Troplong, President of the Senate, the Grand Master of the Household of the Empress expresses his regret at having been unable to take part in the Senate sessions, as he had to leave for Germany due to family matters and to care for his health, which had been weakened by a long bout of gout.

This item, dated June 1853, comes seven months after the proclamation of the Second Empire and five months after the marriage of Napoleon III and Eugénie de Montijo: the heading “Household of the Empress” corresponds to the very first months of this court institution, which had only just been organized. The signer, a descendant of Empress Joséphine’s family, had been placed by Napoleon III at the head of Eugénie’s Household in a decision with dynastic overtones. The recipient, Raymond-Théodore Troplong, served as President of the Senate from 1852 to 1869 and was one of the regime’s major institutional figures.
