Charles Thélin - Autograph letter signed - Napoleon III at Wilhelmshöhe - 1870. Autograph letter signed by Charles Thélin, treasurer of Emperor Napoleon III’s private purse and one of his oldest servants. The letter is dated November 26, 1870, at Wilhelmshöhe, the castle near Kassel where the Emperor was interned after the capitulation of Sedan. Written in brown ink on a bifolium of fine laid vellum paper with horizontal ruling, without letterhead. In this letter, Charles Thélin relays an order placed by the Emperor while in captivity: the purchase in Brussels, since there were no suitable silversmiths in Kassel, of a silver-gilt chapel service intended for the priest who would come to celebrate Mass at Wilhelmshöhe.

He details its composition and budget, and indicates that the Emperor’s secretary will reimburse the advances made. Dimensions: 14.1 x 21.8 cm. Condition: Generally good condition for a document of this period, with marked brown water stains following the folds and forming a cross across the sheets, pronounced horizontal and vertical folds, small losses and tears along the upper edge and at the corners, slightly frayed edges, scattered foxing, as well as later pencil annotations on the front and back. See photos for more details. Number of pages: 2 pages. Carefully shipped in a rigid, waterproof carton. Treasurer of Napoleon III’s private purse, he was one of his most loyal servants, accompanying him from his youth in exile to his captivity at Wilhelmshöhe, and took part in his escape from Fort Ham in 1846.
