Charles Joshua Chaplin, born in Andelys and active in Paris, was one of the most appreciated painters of the Second Empire. A student of Michel Martin Drolling, he established himself as a portraitist of high society, notably of Empress Eugénie. His works, influenced by the painting of Boucher and Fragonard, stand out for their refinement and sensuality. He also taught and trained several artists, including Mary Cassatt.
