Charles DICKENS - Signed autograph letter - Household Words & Thomas Waghorn - 1865. Taking advantage of a request for support for Miss Waghorn's pension, Dickens testifies to his admiration for Lieutenant Thomas Waghorn, an English naval officer, founder of the overland route to India and promoter of the Suez Canal, whose services "are upon record in Public Offices." Dickens recalls that he signed two or three memorials this year for pensions that are still pending. He also recalls that when he was editor of Household Words, he published articles on Lieutenant Waghorn's services. "I have been absent for a day; otherwise I would have answered your letter immediately. I regret that I cannot delve into Miss Waghorn's case, or advocate for a pension for her with any government member. Besides the fact that her late brother's services [Lieutenant Thomas Waghorn] are well documented in public offices, and that I can't add anything new. Those cases are still pending, and as long as they are, I wouldn't find it reasonable to urge others [... Some years ago, as the editor of Household Words, I advocated for the services and claims of Lieutenant Waghorn, as you remember." Household Words was a weekly English magazine published by Charles Dickens in the 1850s.

Dickens notably published The Life and Labours of Lieutenant Waghorn in Household Words, vol 1, from March 30 to September. Good condition - sent by registered mail.
