Champfleury Signed autograph letter Forced savings 1884 Paris
French journalist, art and literary critic, short story writer, and novelist.
Autograph letter signed by Champfleury, addressed to a friend, dated October 29, 1884, in Paris, written in black ink on a double sheet of vellum paper with the letterhead of the Ministry of Public Instruction and Fine Arts.
My dear friend,
You put me in a very awkward position by forcing me to remind you of our verbal agreement almost at the outset of your Review. You yourself had set the price per page at ten francs, which was only fair given the material that goes into these pages; you also generously added a complimentary copy of the Review, which was much appreciated, since I have always read it avidly. If you had spoken to me... of forced economies, of the difficulty of increasing the number of your subscribers, it is almost certain that I would have reached an understanding with you, because I know how heavy your undertaking is, but you told me nothing...
