Autograph letter: Dear colleague, Please accept this note of thanks, sent late by mistake, for your kind remembrance and, at the same time, my sincere wishes for your health!

I think often and fondly of our Prague days and of my former distinguished student in law.

Typed letter: Overwhelmed by the abundance of expressions of attachment, devotion, and love that were addressed to me on the occasion of my 80th birthday, I can only express in weak words the heartfelt thanks, emotion, and feeling of happiness that the experiences of these days have left in me as a solid foundation for the rest of my life.

Yes, as has been expressed from all sides, both orally and in writing, this is what I wished to say, not only in friendly relations, but also in the council, the office, the institute, and among my circle of colleagues. But I did not suspect that my public work had found such an echo in people’s hearts, and thus I feel strengthened once again in the conviction that the ideal sanctuaries of truth, beauty, and gentleness create an indestructible spiritual community between individuals and nations, while at the same time reinforcing our love for our German homeland and people, whose deep and invisible sources provide us all with the necessary strength and to whom we owe infinitely more than we will ever be able to repay during even a long life.
