He wins the Prix Goncourt in 1915 for his novel. Written during his stay at the hospital in Tours for several months. He is received into the Académie Goncourt in 1938. A friend of Maurras and Léon Daudet, a supporter of the Action Française, he supports Marshal Pétain during the German Occupation and is considered one of the ideologists of the Vichy regime.
