Signed autograph letter, handwritten in ink on laid paper with watermark. If I were only losing my Latin by chasing after the Minister of Foreign Affairs, I would take comfort in it, since I no longer want to speak anything but French; but I am wasting time of which I have little left at my age, and perhaps I would be making the Minister waste his as well by speaking to him.

I wanted to tell him two interesting things about England and hand over this German paper that comes to me under the cover of Mr. de la Hogue [Jacques-Gilbert de la Hogue, director of his Kehl printing house]. I sent it to him, wishing him good luck, since he has the ball in hand, from an old player in the return game.

And is France so well off that nothing should ever be said? Dimensions: 23.2 x 19 cm.
