Barbey d’Aurevilly, Louise Read, Two Signed Autograph Letters
Autograph letter signed, French literature, Decadentism. Louise Read, [Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly]. [Set of two autograph letters signed]. The first letter, dated September 7, 1918, is addressed to a certain “Madame Marie-Anne”:
“I am writing to you very late...
you, whom I loved so dearly at first sight sixteen years ago, how happy I was at the news I first learned from good Mrs. How curious it is to see as mothers in their turn those whom one knew still so young!
”
The second, longer letter, in a playful tone, dated October 3, 1923, is addressed to an unknown recipient but evidently someone quite close:
“Dear, very dear Sir, your so kind and charming letter deeply touched me. And I dare say that I had no idea I had been forgotten by you! That is rather arrogant of me! - I was thinking of you, certainly, while very much wishing to meet your young wife, and you can imagine how much what you tell me about her matters to me, and she has read my brother’s poetry! If all this agrees with my desire to make her acquaintance. May your dear wife excuse in advance the poor friend you have in me, who is too busy and too tired, and may she not form a bad opinion of me. Besides, I have been repeating for some time that order, however, has always been preceded by disorder!! 21 handwritten lines and autograph signature on a bifolium (recto of the first leaf only); 48 handwritten lines on a folded sheet; 135 x 210 mm (unfolded) and 85 x 123 mm (folded); envelopes missing.
