Baron, an insurer, then syndic-liquidator in Bourges. Arsène Arnaud Clarétie, known as Jules Clarétie, was born on December 3, 1840, in Limoges and died on December 23, 1913, in Paris.

He was a French novelist, playwright, as well as a dramatic critic, historian, and chronicler of Parisian life. Throughout his long career, in addition to the signature Jules Clarétie, he used more than a dozen pseudonyms to publish his literary works and articles in the press. He also used the collective pseudonym of Jules Tibyl with Charles-Edmond Chojecki. He wrote numerous novels about bourgeois and power circles.
