Autographed letter signed by Alphonse Gratry, addressed to an unidentified correspondent, regarding the drafting of a preface and an upcoming lecture on the relationship between science and religion, at the chapel of the Oratory. "Dear Sir, Please excuse me. I was ill yesterday, and my preface is not yet ready. I will send you the text tomorrow or the day after - and we will have our philosophical argument, if you wish, next week. For at the moment, I am preparing a lecture on the relationship of the sciences to religion, which I must deliver next Sunday, at the chapel of the Oratory, at 9 a. I send you my warmest regards, and I pray Our Lord to bless you." A defender of the dialogue between modern science and Christian faith, he was elected to the French Academy in 1867.
