Signed autograph letter to Charlotte Besnard. Signed autograph letter, no location, May 25, 1925, 2 pages in-4°, to Charlotte Besnard. Superb letter in which Antoine Bourdelle shares with emotion the philosophy that guides his creative process and his reflections on the creation of Albert Besnard's academician sword. Bourdelle expresses his hope that his skilled sculptor can quickly finish the model of the sword guard in order to present it at the agreed upon time. He emphasizes the challenge he faces in adapting the chosen subject to the exceptional artistic style of "Master Painter" Albert Besnard, while also keeping in mind that the creation must also meet the functional requirements of a weapon handle. Bourdelle recognizes the essential nature of the artist's sword, symbolizing the tool of spiritual warfare. He discusses the complexity of the theme and the importance of meeting the expectations of the Master while honoring his own artistic genius and role as the architect of the handle. This letter reveals the poignant philosophy of the artist when practicing his art, reflecting his deep friendship towards Albert Besnard. Albert Besnard, a member of the Academy of Fine Arts since 1912, marked a significant milestone in the history of the French Academy on November 27, 1924, becoming the first painter to join this prestigious institution since 1760. I hope that my excellent sculptor will be fast enough so that I can bring you the model of the sword guard on June 7 at 5 o'clock, at the agreed upon location.

I had to strive to adapt the chosen subject to the great charm of the work of the Master Painter, A. Besnard, but I must not forget that what I must create is also the handle of a weapon.

Whether for parade or not, a weapon! I even believe that an Artist's sword is the most essential! While adapting to the Master Painter, I must also satisfy the daemon of my Art!

To be almost an armorer and remain the Architect of the handle of a tool for spiritual warfare. Truly, the theme is not easy.

Tough fencing, but one that is pleasant to me because of the friendship I have for the Master Painter and the high esteem I hold for all those around him. Please see, Madame, a whole foliage of homage at your feet, very cordially. English and Russian translations are available on request.
