A very beautiful letter from his youth, a few months after the death of his mother Juliette Gide. "Dear Sir, Here is the piece that you kindly requested from me for the twelfth month of your little poetic almanac. I hope it will please you and not spoil your book too much. Please could you send me a proof, before printing, to possibly correct a few small imperfections and definitely establish my text. Would you be so kind as to have it sent to Château de la Roque Baignard, via Lambremer.

Please accept Sir all my thanks and believe in all my literary sympathy. Upon his return to France in the spring of 1896, after his honeymoon with his cousin Madeleine, Gide learns that he has been elected mayor of the. While he conscientiously fulfills his mandate, he refuses to engage in politics. During the summer, he writes El Hadj which will be published in the Centaur's magazine and completes The Fruits of the Earth. He was mayor of La Roque Baignard from 1896 to 1900, and owner of the castle (sold in 1900).
