Autographed letter signed "Anatole Fr." to Claudius [Popelin] Hotel Kwartz, Hohwald, near Barr, Alsace Lorraine, April 17 [1882, in another hand in pencil], 1 p. In-8° On laid paper with Senate letterhead Old mounting trace on the fourth page. The gallant Anatole France wishes to give a reading of one of his most famous poems to "pretty ladies". Please be so kind as to have my verses from the Étrennes aux dames, ed. 82 Âmes obscures [published in his collection Les poèmes dorés in 1873] copied and send them to me immediately. There are pretty ladies asking for them before their next departure and I can't remember a single stanza.

We are taking beautiful walks here, but it's raining and the weather is cool. All yours, to Étienne, to Fernand, to Noël, Anatole Fr.

Est is an almanac of texts and poems published by the Charavay bookstore (where Anatole France frequented) in four volumes, during the years 1881, 1882, 1883 and 1884. These publications include texts by Anatole France, Alphonse Daudet, Théodore de Banville, Judith Gautier, among others.
