Alfred Jarry sends his Gestes to his friend Félix Fénéon, at La Revue Blanche. “My dear friend, I missed the morning mail for my Gestes, but they will be finished in time for the 3 PM mail this afternoon. They should arrive at your home this evening at 8 PM. If you have the leisure to stop by the review before your departure, I would like to receive here a copy of the latest issue, the one with Thadée Natanson's article on the Coronation. Jarry published his first text in La Revue blanche in 1896. Starting in July 1900, his collaboration became regular, notably with his "speculations," a series of highly pataphysical chronicles inspired by current events. In January 1902, the series took the title "Gestes." Jarry explains it as follows: “Under the title 'Gestes,' there will henceforth be in this review, by our care, comments on all kinds of plastic performances. All these gestures and even all gestures are, to an equal degree, aesthetic, and we will attach the same importance to them.

The "gestes" that Jarry announces here are the text "The Appendix of the King," published on July 15, 1902, and dedicated to the illness of the King of England, Edward VII, who had just ascended the throne. That is why he requests the article that Natanson had dedicated, in the previous issue, to his coronation. Jarry and Fénéon held mutual admiration for each other. It was Fénéon who introduced him to La Revue blanche, where he was his main supporter and privileged interlocutor.

For his part, Jarry had the deepest esteem for the one he nicknamed “the one who silences.” Consult our manuscripts The Galerie Autographes des Siècles specializes in the sale and expertise of autographed letters and manuscripts from the great personalities of past centuries.
